The use of bow and arrow is one of the oldest forms of mechanical engineering and was used by many different tribes and cultures. The oldest bow found is estimated to come from 17,500 BC. It is one of the most versatile skills: woodworking is involved and the tensioning of animal tendons. It’s a very precise job.
Of course, we start with basic theory in the Bow building course. We learn to handle the required knives and axes in a safe and responsible way until we are capable to actually work with wood and the necessary tools. We start with the natural basic materials, which we will process ourselves with traditional tools into a real bow.
A bow is not an bow until the bow acts like a bow. There’s going to be a lot of time invested in the precise plaining of the bow, called tillering. Every year ring of the wood is examined. Nothing should be overlooked. Any small flaw in the fiber structure can cause a break. We will try out our homemade bows by learning different shooting and hunting techniques. Learn how our ancestors made bows and what it all feels like to shoot with such a primal weapon in the end. Your own handbow.
